American Legion Post 288 honors veterans
Despite the rain and bad weather, more than 100 people turned out for a Veterans Day program at the American Legion Bingo Hall in Coinjock. The program was coordinated and emceed by American Legion member Sam Chapel, and the Invocation was given by Pastor David Blackman of Mt. Zion Church in Grandy.
Air Force JROTC cadets from Currituck County high school presented the colors, and Girl Scout and Boy Scouts from Currituck County led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Navy veteran Ed Nelson gave the benediction. Mr. Nelson served on a patrol craft in the South Pacific, supporting landings on various islands, including the return of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's troops to the Philippines. A North Carolina native and the father of Phyllis Kohler of Chesapeake Bay Helicopters, Mr. Nelson spent his career as a management analyst for the Navy and turned 88 years old in November.
